1999 october 18applesi pretended to be a harvester this weekend.
we headed for farmland and hit a series of roadside stands. we ended up with a trunk full of autumnal bounty: apples, pears, pumpkins, cider, and even a few late season peaches. the car still smells like an orchard, and the kitchen smells twice as good. i am going to make apple pies, and apple butter and even a new recipe i found for spicy applesauce involving the use of those tiny little cinnamon red hot candies. i may even make pear butter, just because i never have and i can. i am going to put martha stewart to shame. gene and i are both chomping at the bit regarding the pumpkins. we want to carve them and we want to carve them now. last year we just drew on them, which is its own sort of fun but not nearly as wonderful as the whole carving ritual. it is so visceral. i can still remember the feel of the innards, how we scooped them out with our little hands as children. dad said it was because we had smaller hands and it was easier for us but i suspect he just didn't want to get punkin pyuk [his term] all over his own. i am still waffling over carving an intricate design, or going with the childish yet classic triangular feature face. no doubt my inner child will make the right decision. that or my inability to use intricate carving tools. if i knew you were coming, i'd have baked a pie, claire
