1999 september 07harlequin geishaso, i finally read memoirs of a geisha, a book people have been raving about forever it seems. yawn. i really must give up reading books that people have been raving about. i finally read that yaya sisterhood book and was equally unimpressed. i have been trying to decide if it is some sort of personal idiotic backlash, that i am determined not to like these books because they are in fact so popular, but i don't think that is the case. i like stephen king: very popular. i liked she's come undone: oprah popular. i did not, however, like memoirs of a geisha. you know what it reminded me of? a harlequin romance, with an exotic setting and a little more backstory than usual. poor woebegone sad orphan girl meets rich powerful man. poor sad little girl undergoes much strife. poor girl gets break and moves into higher circles where she meets man but cannot have man. girl has years of conflict wanting man. girl gets man after act of desperation and lives happily ever after. i wanted more of the backstory, about the lessons a geisha takes and the restrictions on her behaviour and comings and goings. this was fluff with a few facts thrown in to make it look more intellectual. in my most humble opinion, of course. i am off to read the professor and the madman, another one of those raved about books. let's hope i have better luck.
happy birthday, mama!! ohayo gozaimasu, claire
