1999 july 02fresh meatthe new guy started at the office today. so far there is no singing along with heavy metal music so i don't think i shall nickname him the officemate from hell 2. maybe i'll call him the groceryboy, since he used to be in charge of the produce section at the local supermarket before giving into his geekly urges. i do, however, reserve the right to change his nickname if he develops any particularly annoying habits. as is usual in these cases where someone is hired because someone else, namely me, is drowning under a sea of work, i am so busy drowning i don't have the time to train him. not one red little second. of course, it wouldn't matter if i did because the boys in engineering have forgotten to get him a computer. and the office manager forgot we only have two phone jacks in our office. so he is without computer, without phone, but still making a hell of a lot more than when he had a lot of cherries and potatoes. i've parked him in front of someone else's computer [thank gods for summer vacations] with a user's guide and a system administrator's guide and told him to go to town, learn the product, figure out what he can and can't do. i reckon it's a good way to see if he is on the ball or not. most of the people who have stayed on to become real assets to the company received no training; we were thrown in front of computers with half-assed specs and told we needed to produce fast. Produce or die, baby. It's the way of the computer world. I do hope groceryboy is up to the challenge as i absolutely do not want to interview any more people this year.
i just realized i am on the verge of a three day weekend. what to do, what to do, what to do? we really should try and get away but with half the country operating under the same notion, it might be more restful to just stay home, lounge around in our underwear, or lack thereof, all weekend and be complete and total lazyasses. i do want to see fireworks though, so i suppose we will have to dress at some point. bye bye, miss american pie, claire
