1999 may 17star whats
i do not have tickets to see star wars.
i did not stand in line, did not spend hours hitting redial on my phone, did not offer to trade my first born child, my boyfriend or my mother for opening day tickets, did not enter contest after contest after contest, did not donate ungodly amounts of money to charity for a special prescreening. i do, however, have this spiffy little bookmark; actually, i have three, got 'em for free at walmart. i will see the movie one of these days, probably in july or august when the furor dies down and i'll be able to sit in the theater without people crammed in all around me. of course, if i wait too long then i run the risk of sitting next to one of those people who are trying to set some sci fi geek record for most consecutive days seeing the movie, but as long as he doesn't feel the need to recite the dialog along with the actors, i suppose i shall be able to live with it. i remember seeing the first three. i saw the original with mike, my boyfriend at the time. we sat five rows back from the group of people we had come with, not because he wanted some privacy, but because he didn't want his sisters to see him holding my hand. you can guess how long that relationship lasted; even at fifteen i had my standards. i thought it was good fun, if a bit corny, and was dazzled by the special effects along with the rest of the world. i liked the second one as well, even though i thought the aliens looked completely fake and dorky. i thought that in the first one as well, but i suppose i was too overwhelmed by the pyrotechnics to be overly annoyed by it; i was more jaded by the time the empire rolled around. the ewoks in the third one just about made me barf with their cloying cuteness, but i sat through it just to have the complete set under my belt. so anyhow, this whole ramble can be summarized like this: i hate the hype, i've seen the first three and will see this one, just not right away. speaking of popular culture moments, for what is star wars if not overly popular culture, did anyone catch the superior xena this weekend? callisto, crucifixions, caesar... it would have been the perfectly alliterative episode if caesar didn't have that whole c pronounced as s thing going for it. and gabrielle returned to the ways of kickass, using a bladed weapon even. will wonders never cease?
i went into work this weekend. no one made me, it was purely a volunteer effort, because, even with the proffered bribe, none of the upper weasels ever told me i HAD to go in. but i wanted the extra vacation days, and i did want to be out from under some of the load, so into the office i went. there was no excuse for the piss poor attitude i had whilst working, as it was my decision to be there, so i started making fun of myself by singing the snarfy girl song. c'mon, sing along: it's to the tune of brahm's lullaby and has but two words, "snarfy girl."
snarfy girl, snarfy girl, snarfy gir ir ir irl, snarfy girrrrl, snarfy girrrrl, snarfy girl girl girl girl girl... still slightly snarfy, claire
