1999 february 25 the city of lost childrenit's my own fault; i've been running around like a crazy woman all week at work, in a relatively futile attempt to catch up to where i should be this month. when i come home, i run around like a crazy woman, trying to catch up on all the errands i didn't do last week. then last night, i stayed up entirely too late, watching the city of lost children. an odd little fairytale, the movie was visually stunning. the setting was dark and depressing, one of those nameless futuristic cities where law and order have broken down and things are run by deformed and mutilated misfits. as gene pointed out, "look, the only ones who look normal are the children." he was right, the children were filthy, but possessed of childish good looks to a one. i just wanted to scoop the lot of them up, give them a good bath and feed them. the basic plot was simple--little boy gets kidnapped, man must rescue him with aid of little girl--but this movie was all about the details. from killer fleas to clones, there was always something to hold my attention or make me say, "what the hell is that?" there was even a llama, and you just don't see too many movies with a llama these days. i like strange movies, so i would recommend it to anyone else who does as well. a fairly poor review, but i really am too tired to go on and on about it. i'll just leave it to you to go out and see it yourself if the few details i have shared intrigue you at all. we have some other movies we should watch this week but i am going to put my foot down tonight and try to get to bed early so i don't end up wasting my whole weekend by sleeping. i am all for lazing about doing nothing on weekends, but i want to be awake to enjoy it. not lost, just sleepy, claire home - < previous < - > next > - archives |
