1998 october 21 i feel prettyi feel pretty oh so pretty that the city should give me its key. a committee should be organized to honour me.it is amazing what a good accessory can do. i mean here i am, dressed in the grunge slob way i am am always dressed, the lovable rumply claire you all know and love, and by the mere addition of the birthday scarf, i am stunning. the birthday scarf was a present from little brother number one, philip. he went to greece and turkey with his girlfriend last summer and bought this beautiful, vibrant, all around most wondrous scarf in the silk markets there. a vision of gold and bright blue, swirling around my shoulders, trailing behind me floating on the streams of my prettiness. i am just like like isadora duncan in her heyday, except, of course, since i was walking, not driving in a convertible, there was no threat of broken necks. but enough about me. i know all of you, well at least those of you that had to listen to my tirades about this, will be gratified to learn that a federal judge has determined that the tin drum does not violate child pornography laws, contrary to the beliefs of some idiotic repressed narrowminded oklahoman judge and d.a. the u.s. district judge ruled that while it may have partially met the state of oklahoma's definition of child pornography (there were depictions of underage children performing or simulating sex acts), it did not 'appeal to prurient interests' and therefore failed to meet the legal standards set by the state. rat-a-tat-tat. three cheers and a drumroll, oskar, for prurient interests. i should go on and wax poetical and philosophical about this whole thing, about the value of the movie and the book upon which it was based, about rightwing reactionists more concerned about what is in your vcr than whether it is safe for you and your children to walk to the video store, about people who doth protest too much. but i won't, because today i am caught up in feeling pretty and witty and gay. i'm surprised some judge hasn't banned west side story from classrooms for promoting pretty, witty, underage homosexuals. prettily and wittily, claire
