Frequently Asked Questions

What is custom picture framing?  With custom framing your item is measured, a border size, which looks best, is determined, and using these figures a frame is custom cut to the correct size.  If your item requires a 9 1/4" x 12 7/8" frame, that is what is cut.  Custom framing should never compromise your work of art.

What can I frame?  Frame your collectibles, frame your life, frame a mirror.  If you love it, frame it.  We can frame just about anything.

What does "rabbet" mean? The rabbet is the inside space where your artwork fits into the frame.  The rabbet depth is the width of this space.

What are United Inches?
United Inches is a framing term that you get by adding together one height and one width of your frame.  (i.e.  13 7/16" + 18" = 32 U.I.)  any fractions of an inch, round up to the next longer inch.

How should I clean plexi-glass? Plexi-glass is plastic, not glass. Do not use glass cleaners and paper towels or the surface will become cloudy and scratched.  We recommend using a soft, damp, cotton cloth and  plexi-glass cleaner.

What is plaque mounting? Your art is permanently mounted onto a wood backing.  The image is laminated with an UV protective film to prevent fading and to protect the surface.  Finally the board is hand beveled and finished with a coloured edge of your choice.  As this is a permanent process, it should not be used on items of monetary or sentimental value.

What should be plaque mounted? Perfect for photographs, documents, employee awards, and magazine articles.  It is also great for kids rooms or high traffic areas; no glass to break.

How do you clean dirty pastels?  Put  in a Ziploc plastic bag of ground rice (available at Asian Markets) and gently toss the bag for a few minutes.  The result is super clean pastels.

What are art cards or note cards? Art or note cards are blank on the inside and suitable for all occasions. You can personalize an art card to fit your needs - an invitation to family, a thank you to friends or a Christmas greeting to clients. Printed on 13pt. card stock and  include envelopes.

What is a Serigraph?  A Serigraph is a reproduction created using a multi-layered screen-printing process. In Serigraphy coloured inks are pressed through sheets of silk or fine mesh stretched tightly across a wooden frame. The screens are masked allowing the inks to pass through to the paper beneath only where they are needed. Therefore, for each colour a separate screen is used. Serigraphs may require a hundred or more colours or screens to achieve the desired effect.

What kind of glass should I use?   Ultra Violet filtering acrylic or glass will slow down (not prevent) fading and yellowing.  There should be a space of at least 2mm between the surface of the art and the glazing provided by a window mat or spacer.  Pastels and other powdery/fragile media should be glazed with glass, not plastic and may require a larger air space.

What matting should I use?   Always choose 100% rag or purified wood pulp, either neutral pH (for photographs) or with alkaline buffering, for the back mat and window mat.  Coloured matting must be water fast and fade resistant.  All matting should be a least 4-ply thickness.  There should be at least one inch between the edge of the matted artwork and the edge of the frame.
