Asa B. Isham was a First Lieutenant in Company "F" of the 7th Regiment of the Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. The Regiment first came into existence on September 24, 1862 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and stayed together as a unit until December 15, 1865. The remaining soldiers then became part of the First Michigan Veteran Cavalry.

Among the battles that the 7th Michigan Cavalry participated in are Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Front Royal, Cedar Creek, and Five Forks.
