imagine there's this kid who just makes you crack up at the sight of him. but he's a rock star in the best band in the world. imagine finally meeting this kid. would you be starstruck or would you just want to hang out with him like he's your best friend? last night was amazing. i finally saw FINCH. emerson, indy, august 10, 8pm. i had never been to the emerson before and i just knew it was on 10th street so after visiting butler, we headed down meridian hoping that it intersected with 10th which it did but then after a couple blocks, 10th street just ended so we drove around trying to head in the direction of the emerson but having no clue where the hell i was. after about 5 minutes i found the murat and saw vecino's coffee shop across the street from it which is where fingers-cut, megamachine played a few days earlier. so we're driving around totally lost and all of a sudden we're on 10th street. i'm a fucking rad driver let me tell you. oh yeah and 10th street is a bit strange. like everybody was outside and this one dude was sitting in the back of his explorer chomping on a sandwich in his garage. finally we get to the emerson, the CBGB of Indy. the bus was parked right out front and a couple vans with trailers hitched up to them. while we were standing in line outside, nate barcalow just walked up to the bus and like no one even went up to him. thats so fucking rad. he got in the bus and some dude behind us goes "did anyone fucking see that?!" but when nate came back out, a couple people went up to him. but still i mean the singer of the headlining band just walks outside, you would think everyone would rush him, but it was just like oh theres nate. inside the emerson is painted all black. it makes for a good intimate basement-show feeling. we didnt know any of the opening bands so we decided not to go up front until finch. we went and checked out the merch tables and saw a sign that said counterfit would not be playing due to health problems. so another band called first aid kit was taking their spot on the tour and it was their first date. i definitely did not like them. their singer closed his eyes and sang like ballads. they were too mellow for me. so recover was up next and their singer was wearing a shirt that said "indiana girls best in the world" which he wore just for us. their singer looks like any other hardcore band guy, actually renee said he looks like the all-american rejects guy, but the other 3 guys had long hair and looked like they belonged in an 80s hair metal band. it was the weirdest combination. but their music is pretty good. i believe they have a song called "fuck me for free." omg and during their set this guy walked past me and when he was about a foot away from me i like freaked out because i realized who it was. i bet my eyes were as big as soccer balls. i saw his hair and jeans and jacket and he was really tall. randy fucking r2k walked right past me. and i dont think anyone around me really knew it but i looked straight at renee and she knew too. and then about a minute later he came back and walked right by me again and he looked at me and i had this look like omg-you're-the-coolest-kid-ever! renee leaned over and told me that he was just standing back at the merch table. i think that is sooo cool that they aren't afraid to just walk around even though everyone knew who he was. during the last song of recover's set, the singer did a handstand and then fell over into the crowd and went surfing until he got to the point where there wasn't enough people to keep going and then he just stayed there and hung out. finch was up next and i thought everyone would rush up but actually people left so i got up pretty damn close like four people back and right by randy's mic. they opened with "worms of the universe." i fucking love that song its insane. they played probably 7 songs from what it is to burn and a lot of new stuff. they also played a cover song but i don't know what it was. "grey matter," "perfection through silence," "untitled," "three simple words," "letters to you," "what it is to burn," "without you here," "ender." i really like their new stuff. it's different but it's still finch. the crowd wasn't very responsive to the new stuff though. i think it's just because they didn't know it so they didn't rock out but man i did because i thought it was really good. between songs they messed around with like science guitar patterns. renee thought that was randy's idea because it sounded robotic. during one song, i saw nate walk past randy's mic and look at it. i cracked up because nate's so tiny and randy's so tall. about the 3rd song into their set i realized that randy had a beard only on the left side of his face. crazy kid. oh yes and since alex pappas their original drummer is no longer in the band, they are using the drummer from counnterfit and i don't know if it's permanent or what. but randy was like hey check out mark our drummer, he saved our lives, he saved our lives, say thank you mark, ok on 3 everyone say thank you mark. god i love that kid. and then at one point i remembered on atticus when he says "thanks for spfending the day with me" and then like 5 seconds later he said something with that lisp to it so i just died laughing. nate is so fucking hot dude. and i love his tattoo on his right arm. their last two songs were "what it is to burn" and "ender." during what it is to burn, the crowd went nuts. i was just getting tossed around and my shorts were starting to fall down but it was all good because i had an awesome time in there. and then they ended with ender which i absolutely love. omg and everyone started crowdsurfing like crazy. and there's no barrier at emerson, just the stage, so if you surf you just go up on stage, and there was only one guy getting everyone out but there were so many that another guy had to come and i really wanted to go crowdsurfing but then it was just like constant people so i decided not to. its not really a rocking out song so i kinda stepped back and soaked it in. i finally got to see my band. i got what it is to burn spring break 2003 and here it was august 2004 and i finally got to see them. it was totally worth the wait. and after their set they went back to the merch tables. seriously i love them for just being out there and not hiding backstage the whole time. i bought a shirt and randy was at the finch table so i got him to sign my ticket and told him it was a really good show and he said thanks. i met my favorite guy randy r2k of finch my favorite band. it was probably the best night of my life. and it was no problem just standing there next to him and letting him know that i thought he was a really awesome guy. because that's what he is. he's not randy the rock star. he's just that guy in that band. and did i mention that he's hilarious? |
