1. Course Expectations  [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
Mathematics I is a full-year mathematics course designed to introduce students to algebraic and geometric concepts, and review basic probability and statistics skills. The mathematical content of the course will prepare the student for entering Algebra I following successful completion. This course counts toward the three-course mathematics requirements for graduation. Course materials the student will bring to class each day are: a covered textbook; two pencils; eraser; pen with red ink; text highlighter; low odor dry erase marker; notebook with paper; and calculator with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root and power functions. All students must have network access forms completed and signed by a guardian to complete the computer assignment components of this course on the school’s network.

2. X.C.S.D. Grading Scale   [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]

    100-93% = A
     92-85% = B
     84-75% = C
     74-65% = D
     64-0% = F
 Incomplete = I

(A 50% minimum F may be earned when 75% or more of the achievement measures* are attempted. Less than a 75% effort, the 0-64% F applies. Attempted work is defined as an effort was made to complete 75% or more of each achievement measure.)

3. Basis for Grades (no less than one grade per week will be recorded)
[Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
Grades shall reflect a student's progress in meeting the written objectives of Mathematics I course/curriculum through the following achievement measures:

     Value Achievement Measure Definition
40% Class work/Homework Individual/group; neat, complete, labeled, accurate 20%    Journal Assignments     Neat, complete, and appropriate content 40% Quizzes/Tests Computational, objective/short answer, complete, accurate 100% Total

THE TEACHER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE AND RETURN TO STUDENT FOR COMPLETION ANY GRADED ASSIGNMENT DEEMED BY THE TEACHER TO BE LACKING STUDENT EFFORT. STUDENT WILL RECEIVE ZERO FOR REFUSED ASSIGNMENT IF ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS NOT GIVEN AND REVISED WORK IS NOT SUBMITTED A SECOND TIME FOR TEACHER GRADING.

All grading components' work is expected by teacher's stated due date/time except in cases of: (1) excused absence, or (2) extreme hardship where student has prearranged with teacher an alternate due date.

All work must be labeled correctly; whether given to teacher for review or grading, or placed in the journal. The label will help the student organize and assist the teacher in grading and returning work. Work that is not labeled correctly will receive the greater of a 5% or 1-point grade deduction for the assignment.

As shown in the example, the upper right-hand corner contains the student information, and the upper left-hand corner contains the assignment information:

                                    Ashley Brown 1-14
                                    HW L 2-4 p. 43
                                    Ex. 13-43 ODD
                                    8/30/00

(NOTE: A number will be assigned to each student in the class and will be used in the upper right-hand corner instead of 1-14 as shown. For the sake of brevity, acceptable heading abbreviations are: Q = Quiz; HW = Homework; CW = Class work; T = Test; N = Notes; V = Vocabulary; L = Lesson; p = page; pp = pages; Ex = Exercise/Example).

Homework is due beginning of period. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR A GRADE. However, student may elect to redeem a homework pass for one (1) homework assignment per grading period and receive full credit for that one assignment. Student is encouraged to do the late homework and self-check answers with teacher but will receive no credit, except as noted for homework pass. Homework pass cannot be redeemed for any other graded components. Student will be expected to show on paper how answer was obtained. When steps are not followed consistent with teacher's class examples, the half-hearted attempt will receive one-half credit. When no work is shown, no credit will be given.

Class work is done in class and due at the end of the period, unless otherwise announced by teacher. One day's grace with 5% point deduction can be given at teacher's discretion for unusual circumstances. Class work will be graded for completeness of work shown consistent with class notes and accuracy of steps and answers. Student will be expected to show on paper how answer was obtained. No credit will be given for answers without supporting written work. Group work will require each student to turn in a separate paper.

Journal assignments will be given from the textbook, on teacher-prepared worksheets, or copied onto student's notebook paper from an overhead or chalkboard, not less than twice each grading period--once prior to interim reports and once prior to the end of the grading period. The journal will be graded for neatness, completeness, and content. Journal assignments received after the given teacher's due will be assessed 5% of the assigned points per day late. NO LATE JOURNALS ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER FIVE LATE DAYS. Be aware that journal assignments not turned in by the last day of the interim or grading period may result in a temporarily lower grade report. For all journal assignments, the student should: include student's name and number; and use complete, simple English sentences and paragraphs for all written explanations.

Five-Minute Quizzes--will be given daily and can cover vocabulary, current or previous lessons, and notes/examples taken in class.

Weekly Tests will be given on the last scheduled day of attendance (usually Friday) to cover any material discussed/ completed during that week. All students present on the day of the test are expected to attempt the test, regardless of previous class attendance, to be eligible for a retake. Notes, calculator, and textbook MAY NOT BE USED ON QUIZZES OR TESTS, unless announced by teacher. Exercises will be similar to those taken in class notes and completed in class work/homework.

Quizzes and Tests will be graded for the same components as class work with an expectation of greater attention to detail in labeling/showing supporting work, ordering steps, writing explanations, and arriving at accurate answers. When calculators are permitted, student still must show written work. Quizzes--will be announced or unannounced and can cover vocabulary, current or previous lessons, and notes/examples given in class.

Retakes of quizzes and any test may be given to any student who achieves less than 75% of the assigned points for any one test or quiz. Restrictions are that the alternate test or quiz must be: (a) preceded by student's completion of intervention work prescribed by teacher; and (b) scheduled during teacher's prep period or after school only, by the last scheduled attendance day of the week following the poor evaluation. Also, retakes may be a different, equivalent but not identical quiz or test.

Notetaking is required for class. Assertive discipline will be used to enforce notetaking. From time to time, teacher may collect notes as a class work grade or announce that notes may be used on quizzes or tests in class. Therefore, students are expected to take notes.

When any late work is accepted by teacher and overlaps the interim or 9-weeks grade report, the grade will be entered as a zero (0) and be included in the grade earned-to-date. Incomplete will not be given on grade report due to accepted late work.

Student who fails to bring book to class will receive a zero for the daily work performed from the textbook. The teacher is a traveling teacher and will not bring extra books to class for student who forgets to bring the book.

COMPUTER LAB ASSIGNMENTS    [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
The teacher will monitor closely student progress on computer lab assignments. Student is expected to stay on task working only on the software and Web addresses assigned by the teacher. Student who does not follow computer lab rules or is observed using software or web addresses other than given for the assignment(s) will receive zero (0) on the assignment(s) and will be sent to the main office for the remainder of the period. Remember, multiple infractions can result in losing computer lab privileges. Student who does not have network access due to lack of guardian authorization or suspension of lab privileges will not be permitted in the lab during computer assignments in this course. The student will be assigned to the library to complete the assignments in equal time period, but without the aid of technology.

4. Cheating and Grading   [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]

Evidence of cheating will result in a zero (0) for the work to be evaluated for both the student offender who copied and the student who failed to protect the work from being copied.

THE ACT OF CHEATING INCLUDES:

A) SHARING/COPYING ANOTHER STUDENT’S ANSWER, CODE, OR DATA
B) USING/COPYING FROM ANOTHER STUDENT’S DISK
C) USING/COPYING FROM THE SERVER OR INTERNET/WORLD WIDE WEB
D) LOOKING/COPYING FROM ANOTHER STUDENT’S PAPER
E) ASKING ANOTHER STUDENT’S ANSWER
F) USING ANOTHER STUDENT’S NAME AND PASSWORD TO GET WORK/ANSWERS ELECTRONICALLY

5.Make Up of Work [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
The student will receive the same number of days to make up work as the number of days excused. Failure to make up work will result in a zero(0). Following an excused absence, the student must check the posted subject’s daily assignment list for missed work. Before the make-up period has expired, the student is responsible for turning in all missed work in the class-period’s make-up folder and arranging with teacher to take any missed quizzes and/or tests. The teacher will not ask student to turn in missed work or schedule taking missed quizzes and tests. Student will schedule make-up of quizzes/tests during teacher’s prep period (5th period) or after school only. Student is responsible for notes missed during absence.

When make-up period overlaps the interim or 9-weeks grade report, the grade earned-to-date will be recorded. Incomplete will not be given on grade report when student has not completed make-up work, except in cases of short-term home instruction, extended illness under doctor’s care, or dire personal hardship reported to teacher by counselor’s office.

Summer School Make-up: (See also 11. Grading and Suspension/Expulsion, 1.c)
To qualify for summer school MAKE-UP courses, a student must have attempted (turned in and/or completed) at least 75% of the course work. Failure to meet the attempted 75% rule, the student will have to take the failed course over as new work.

6. Attendance and Grading    [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
Daily class attendance is crucial for student success in all grading components.
Excess of five (5) days absence per nine (9) weeks = Failure (F) for the nine (9) weeks.
Excess of nine (9) days absence for the semester = Failure (F) for the semester.
Excess of 18 days absence for the year = Failure (F) of the course.
EXCESS OF 5 DAYS ABSENCE YEAR-TO-DATE STUDENT MAY NOT BE EXCUSED FROM ANY EXAM.

7. Interim Reports and Grades

All students are to receive an interim report the Wednesday of the 4th week during the first and third nine week grading period and only those with an average grade of less than 75% . Whenever an interim report is issued, the report will reflect an ALPHA grade.

8. Extra Credit WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE for this course. If you are coming to school daily, doing the assigned work, making up missed assignments, and retaking quizzes and tests as permitted, you should be successful in this course. Often the teacher builds into quizzes/tests/assignments bonus points that can bolster your grade, so take advantage of these opportunities, too.

9. Example of Grade Computations    [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
Semster Averaging Rule
The student’s grade for the course will be formulated in the following manner in grades 7-12. Semester grades are based on three grades: two quarter grades and a semester exam. A student must have a passing grade for at least two of the three in order to pass the semester. (This is not saying that a student who passes two of the three is guaranteed to pass.)

  a. Do not apply rule when 75% or more of the achievement measures were attempted.
       1. If the student’s semester average is passing, the student receives the equivalent letter grade.
       2. Teacher’s discretion should be in the best interest of the student.
  b. Apply rule when 75% or more of the achievement measures were not attempted.

The student's grade for the course will be formulated in the following manner:

  a. Nine-Weeks Grade Average x % Value = Weighted Value
      1. Class work/Homework 80 x .40 = 32.0%
      2. Journal 90 x .20 = 18.0%
      3. Quizzes/Tests 70 x .40 = 28.0%
      Grade you earned out of 100%: 78.0% = C
b. Semester Grade x % Value = Weighted Value 1. 1st nine-weeks 88 x .45 = 39.6% 2. 2d nine-weeks 88 x .45 = 39.6% 3. Exam 80 x .10 = 8.0% Semester Average Grade out of 100%:87.2% = B
c. Final Grade Semester Grade x % Value = Weighted Value 1. 1st Semester 82.0 x.50= 41.0% 2. 2d Semester 89.0 x.50= 44.5% Final Grade out of 100% 85.5% = B

10. Students who are exempted from Final Exams due to Renaissance and Senior Proficiency Tests:

  b. Semester Grade Grade x % Value = Weighted Value
      1. 3d nine-weeks 85 x .45= 38.5%**
      2. 4th nine-weeks 75 x .45= 33.8%**
      3. Exam
         Average of 3 + 4 80 x .10= 8.0%**
         (85 + 75) / 2 = 80
      Grade You Earned out of 100%: 80.3% = C

**To be eligible to be exempted from an exam, a student must have passed both nine weeks.

11. Grading and Suspension/Expulsion     [Top of  Page] [Mrs. K's Math Page]
As authorized by law the Board of Education may suspend/expel a student who has been found guilty of violating Board of Education Policy. The following grading and reporting procedures will apply:

A. Student is to receive a zero (F) for a daily grade*** for each day of suspension.
***Grade earned for a single day’s effort (i.e., quiz, homework, assignment, participation grade).

B. If work to be completed or grade to be earned would reflect more days’ work than days suspended, the student may take test(s) and/or turn in project(s) for credit.

C. A student who has accumulated five days of unexcused absence due to suspension and/or unexcused absence is to receive an “F” for the nine weeks.

D. A student who is suspended/expelled and/or excluded from school is to receive a zero “F” for each day suspended/expelled and/or excluded per the following conditions:

1. Students suspended/expelled for more than 5 days within a grading period will receive an “F” for each for the nine weeks with no make-up allowed.
2. Students suspended/expelled for more than 9 days, within a semester will receve an “F” for the semester with no make-up allowed.
3. Students expelled for more than 18 days within the year will receive an “F” for the year with no make-up allowed and may not attend summer school.
4. Students excluded for a year will receive an “F” for the year with no make-up allowed and may not attend any high school in the State of Ohio.

E. The parents may request a hearing with the principal if extenuating circumstances exist.

F. The superintendent of schools, or his/her designee, may review and/or modify a student's grade on a case by case basis.
