Descendants of Thomas Moody from South Yorkshire England abt 1765

This document is from Brian Wilson Email [email protected]

The area where the Moody family or families lived prior to where they finally settled is only a short distance, it was mainly a farming area before the industrial revolution, but then a few cloth mills were built and a number of small coal mines were opened. The area is relatively small but it is difficult to research, as the area lies between the towns of Bamesley, Wakefield, and Huddeersfield, and the records and registers are split between the 3 South Yorkshire towns. Their are 8 churches in the area concerned where the Moody Families worshiped at the time, confirmed by the family records. I have copied all the Moody entries from the I.G.I. and tried to sort them into family groups, but I am unsure if they are related or different Moody Families groups, the records of the two oldest churches are in a poor state and a lot of the early records are missing and no trace of the Bishops Transcripts.

The first entry I can locate is the baptism of Anne to a Thomas and Mary in the year 1664, at Silkstone Parish Church. I have traced and proven my Moody line back to the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth at Cumberworth PC. Church. They lived at Wood Nook, they were farmers and owned and rented 3 farms in the area. But it would seem that only a short distance from them a second Moody family resided at the Wind Mill, and they also were named Thomas and Elizabeth.

It has been difficult sorting out whom the children actually belong to, or if indeed it was the same family living in two different addresses, as I can only locate the marriage and deaths of what I think is my Moody family line.

I have not been able to place or date the birth of Thomas Moody, it may be that he was born in another area of the country. It may be difficult to prove unless I locate someone else who maybe able to sort out the Moody Families.

There may be a possibility that Thomas was born to a William who married a Mary abt 1765 at Emily and that William was born to a Thomas and Martha on jun 20 1742, and they were married Feb 1728 at High Hoyland P.C. and Thomas was born to a Johnennism Moody on aug 17 1707 at High Hoyland P.C.
