In Apr 6, 1858 he was listed as one of the Commissioners of Highways in Dale Twnshp IL. In the Mclean Co. '59-60 directory a H. Merriman is listed as the Street Commissioner for the City of Bloomington and a H. P. Merriman is listed as City Treasurer and as a Public School Teacher. In the 1860 cenuse he is listed with his twin brother Hiram as living in Dale Twnship with his second wife and family but, H.P. and Hiram are both listed in the 59-60 directory. In the 1866 atlas of Mclean Co. H & H Merriman own 80 acreas in Martin Twnshp, section 29. In the 1866 City Directory he is listed at h s s Front, nt C A. St. L. R. R. bridge.

His second and third marriages are confusing. The Bloomington Evergreen Cemetery records show "Henry, died Apr. 14, 1887, age 75yr. 7mo. 8dys. "husb."", and "Clarissa J., died May 7, 1888, age 69yr. 1mo.26dys."wife"". His will of 1886 lists his children, Henry P., Elizabeth M. Ewing, Fannie M. Johnson and Charles F., and his wife Frances M. The 1860 census shows his wife as Jane age 36 (1824). The 1870 census shows his wife as Frances age 39 (1831), and he being 57.
