LEVINESS
1. JOSEPH1 LEVINESS was born 1795, and died before 1850. He married MARGARET MEYERS. She was born Abt. 1791 in New Jersey, and died Jul 1866 in City Island, NY. There were several Leviness, Lavinus, Levinus, Levines families in Westchester co. and New York City and, it is difficult to say which family Joseph belonged too. Vital Records are difficult to come by and the only authority on this family, Osmund Leviness has not been able to connect this family to the ancestors of Etienne Lavigne, yet members of this family were living on City Island in the same Households with my ancestors. My best guess would be that Joseph was the son of Thomas Leviness5 (1753-1838) and would be then the brother of Thomas Fisher Leviness and uncle to Stephen D. Leviness who were both living with Joshua Leviness, Joseph's Son. Sources: His name was obtained from the death certificate of Nathaniel Leviness. Records from the Trinity Methodist Church, City Island state that Margaret became a member August 1854 and that she was the mother of Joshua, Joseph & Nathaniel, also, from notes of Mildred Barstow Bellingham. About Benjamin
Barstow
Benjamin Barstow and Eugene Reed appeared in the 1870 census living in the same Household, Benjamin Barstow as a Ships Carpenter age 42 and Eugene Reed as a Caulker age 26 both from ME. In the notes of Mildred Barstow Bellingham, grand daughter of Benjamin, she stated that Benjamin came from Damariscotta, ME, but unfortunately she did not know who Benjamin's parents were, yet she stated that Benjamin and Eugene were cousins. Vital Records from Nobleboro and Damariscotta lists several Benjamin Barstows, all descendants of George Barstow who died in that region c.1770. 3 Benjamins have the right age. 1850 Damariscotta Census
Benjamin 3d married Sally Knowlton and is listed in the 1870 Nobleboro, ME census . Benjamin P. married Clara Little and drowned in 1852 Benjamin 2d married his 1st cousin Susan Hussey Barstow and had 1 child Henry A. Barstow. He does not appear in the 1860 census, and Susan and her son are living with Lot Barstow, Benjamin's father in that year. She married 2nd Mathias Benner in 1865. Since I did not find a a death record for this Benjamin could he be the one that married Phebe Ann c.1866 in City Island? In the 1850 Damariscotta Census a few houses down from Benjamin 2d #187, I found Rufus R. Reed #214 who has a son Eugene age 8 and in 1860 a son named George E. age 18. In the 1870 City Island census Eugene's age is 26 and in the 1880 census his age is 38. Could this be the Maine connection? |
