Audience and Revelance
Gypsy is an internationally popular topic, found in all genres. Their exotic appearances have been made the subject of many modern day photographic exhibits. Artist credit them for the passion they bring to the canvass: Van Gogh was inspired by their Gypsy Encampments with Caravans, Caravaggio painted a mystical presence in The Palm Reader: Television and film productions often call them in to spice up the plot, such as the unforgettable Gypsy catfight in James Bonds From Russia with Love or Brad Pitts punky character Mickey ONeil in the 2000 film Snatch. Some of todays directors have already recognized their draw and begun focusing on them as the primal theme. (Gadjo Dilo (Crazy White Man) - Black Cat, White Cat (98) and 2006 award winning film Transylvania) Last year world-renowned author Paulo Coelho chose to feature the Gypsies in his novel The Witch of Portobello as did Colum McCann in his third novel, Zoli. Gypsies today are a hot issue. Presently 80% of European Gypsies reside in new or candidate EU countries. Many Europeans fear that the opening of boarders will begin a new migration rivaling that of emancipation in the mid 19th century. Acts of xenophobia towards the Gypsy people are on a rise in Western Europe. The old stereotypes are reemerging. This book reveals the true Gypsy people and their simple way of life. It is a book both in demand (ascertained by the market of Gypsy related topics in bookstores and theaters) - and a book in need. |
