I saw it on my calendar
and kept you in my thoughts
Did you see me watching?
 
I thought of long ago
skiing friends laughing
or recent paddles
dancing across the mud flats
 
I wasn't there on your day this year
but my heart smiled at the calendar
marked clearly for a birthday
 
a friend forever
a dear sweet poetic soul
that understands
and listens
 
and knows
