the driving lesson

not me - my son's
first time driving
and my first time watching

Al the instructor
noticed I was nervous
and Why? I wonder

because my only child
is able to motor 200 horses
onto Vacationland highways
vying for space
with road drunks
and New Jersey tourists?

would he remember to look both ways
like when we taught him
walking to school
a short decade ago?

both ways Zack
watch for the other guy
you are driving now
and I am shifting too
climbing these hills
with a bit of difficulty

I hesitate to accelerate
pumping the brakes occasionally
I am a bit nervous
playing it safe
well aware 
of children in the road
