| RECALL TALKING POINTS Despite the spin from the pro-recall Republicans, everyone should understand one important fact ? initiatives that start out around 50% in the polls nearly always lose, especially when faced with funded opposition, as the recall surely will. The last four public polls that have asked about the recall (two PPIC polls, the Los Angeles Times Poll, and the Field Poll, taken over the past six weeks) all show it at around 50% yes (between 48% and 51%, specifically) with opposition between 41 and 43%. Once voters are provided with some information about the recall (its cost, or if a budget is passed), opposition grows and support drops sufficiently for the recall to lose. Based on these numbers we firmly believe that the recall will be defeated. The Governor?s record of accomplishment on behalf of Californians is unmatched. Under Governor Gray Davis, California has become a national leader in protecting a woman?s right to choose, working families, and our environment. We?ve insured 1 million children and students? test scores are up four years in a row. Conservatives want to oust the Governor so they can roll back the progress we?ve made. We will not let them. The recall effort will cost nearly $70 million in taxpayer money. This is a partisan Republican effort to pursue a conservative agenda This is a circus, not a solution. The next Governor could be elected with as little as 20% To Sum It Up: The recall will cost taxpayers an additional $70 million and is a partisan effort by Republicans to pursue their conservative agenda. Cost: This election will cost taxpayers an additional $70 million to redo an election that was held just a few months ago. This money would be better spent on education, health care, and public safety. Partisanship: The recall is a partisan effort by Republicans to take over the Governor?s office and push through their conservative agenda that opposes a woman?s right to choose, common-sense gun safety laws, worker protections, and tough environmental protection. Circus: The recall has become a circus where the likes of Larry Flynt, adult film star Mary Carey, and actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger are trying to oust a Governor with several decades in public service. Not a solution: The fact is 47 states and the federal government all have budget deficits due to a national recession, the September 11th terrorist attacks, the dot-com collapse, and abuse by corporate crooks like Enron. The recall won?t fix anything and instead of just blaming Governor Davis for everything as recall supporters are doing; we need to come together to solve our problems. 20%: Because of the way the recall works, the next governor could be elected by 20% of the vote, or even less, and could be inexperienced, would have to take office the next day, and not be able to solve the problems facing the state. This could mean we?d see a Governor Larry Flynt or Governor Darrell Issa. In conclusion, with the recall garnering a bare majority of support, if that, proponents have NO margin of error and opponents only have to win over a small percentage of voters to win. If opponents of the recall sway some wayward Democrats and independents, then the recall loses. Therefore, if we stay focused and spread the word that this is a $70 million waste of taxpayer money, that conservatives are trying to roll back all the progress we?ve made and implement a right-wing agenda, that this is a dangerous circus, then we will defeat the recall. |
