Harlequin Ducks - Histrionics

Many bird watchers consider this unique little duck to be one of the most beautiful species of ducks in North America. Exquisitely attired in a bold combination of steel-gray, black, white, and rich chestnut, these hardy birds spend their winters swimming and diving effortlessly among the rocks along exposed, surf-pounded shores. Identification: 14 1/2-21”. Adult males are unmistakable: steel-gray with bold slashes of black and white, a chestnut stripe over the eye, and a broad swath of chestnut along the flank. Females and immature males are dark brown with two white spots on the side of the face. They are smaller overall than female scoters, with a much smaller bill. Also compare with the female Bufflehead.
