Summer Bridge

Worried about your student loosing academic ground over summer vacation?
Watch this space for helpful hints!
Loss of academic skills over summer vacation can be a serious problem. Educators call methods of preventing this "bridging".  Parents help by building a bridge of activities to link the work of one year with the next.
Some Easy Ideas:

1.   Make weekly trips to the library for at least one book.
2.  Write letters to relatives or friends.
3.  Keep a weekly expense record on spending allowance or grocery  money.
4.   Keep a "Summer of 2007" journal.  Entries can be hand written or typed.  Add interesting memorabilia such as postcards, photographs, illustrations, maps, ticket stubs or programs.
5.   Write a book this summer!  Choose an interesting children's picture book that does not contain any text.  Use the illustrations to spark your imagination and create your very own story book.
6.  Use the Math Page links to review and practice math skills.
7.  Use the cursive writing link on the Language Arts Page to practice cursive writing.

4 Easy Steps to a Successful Summer Bridge Program:

1.  Set a schedule.
2.  Reserve a space for summer bridge activities.
3.  Have books and materials to guide you and your children.
4.  Build incentives into your program.
