Personal Response Journal-Brave New World

Aldous Huxley aptly produces a variety of emotions with his novel Brave New World.  At first, I was interested to see the scientific processes of reproduction in the future.  The difference of six hundred years made the novel seem like a science fiction one.  I was also curious, because some of the predictions have already partially come true.  I found the two extremities of society very shocking.  The characters seem very real to me.  I found myself sympathizing with the characters and sharing in their emotions.  I felt as though I were part of the novel.
Throughout the story, I found myself placing myself in the situations of the characters.  I thought about how I would think and react.  What would I do if I were in their shoes?  This exploration resulted in an epiphany.  We are all conditioned.  The people of London are conditioned to maintain social stability.  The Savage Reservation inhabitants are conditioned, as well, only differently.  I am also conditioned.  Our world conditions us to be as we are.  We are shaped by our environment and surroundings.  My conditioning would not allow me to live in either the Brave New World or the Savage Reservation.  No one is immune from the influence of factors beside oneself.
