Essay 2

When I hear the adage, Like father, like son, it makes me think about several traits that seem to run in my family.  I am fortunate to have good parents and also to live right next door to two wonderful grandparents.  My other two grandparents also live here in Bennettsville, so I am very lucky to have a strong family structure.  My Dad has told me many times that one of the things he regrets is that he never really got to know his grandparents because they all died either before he was born or while he was very young.  Having a loving mother and father and all four grandparents living right here in Bennettsville is one of the blessings of my life.
One of the physical traits that I have in common with my parents is that I have been blessed with good health and some natural athletic ability.  Both my parents are pretty good athletes.  My dad is out of shape now, but he used to be a good basketball player, as well as football and baseball.  He also plays golf and is a decent tennis player.  My mom is an even better tennis player.  It seems like athletic ability runs in our family and I have always enjoyed sports and found them to come easy to me.
A behavioral trait that seems to run in my family is a commitment to serving and helping others.  I enjoy helping others and making them happy, even if this means sacrificing my own happiness sometimes.  I think I got this behavioral trait from my father.  He has shown me a great example of sacrificing to help other people.  He gives up a great deal of his time by putting other peoples concerns ahead of his own.  He has taught me community service and helping others is very important.  He demonstrates this by participating in many community service projects to improve the quality of life for other people of the community.  He has taught me the importance of this trait, and as a result, I have completed a community service project on my own to get my Eagle Scout badge, and I enjoyed giving a week of my summer vacation to help less fortunate people by rebuilding their homes.
I have also learned from my dad how to show good leadership skills and how to communicate well with others.   My dad is a natural leader and he shows these leadership skills in his everyday life, as well as in his job.  He has taught me that sometimes you have to lead by example.  I have watched my dad demonstrate leadership all my life, and have learned that if you treat people with respect they will look up to you as a leader.  My dad and I are also able to communicate with many different types of people.  I have watched him treat people from all walks of life in the same manner.  As a result, I have learned to adapt and communicate with many different types of people.
Many of these qualities have discussed are handed down through the generations.  I have also seen all of these traits in my grandparents, so it helps me understand where I got them.  There really is a great deal of truth in the old adage Like father, like son.
