- Military Service:
- On December 2, 1861, John ABRAMS enlisted in Company C, 22nd Kentucky Infantry under the command of John F. Lacey at Camp G. D. Prentice. Shortly after he enlisted, John contracted the Measles and was left at the hospital in Ashland, Kentucky in December 1861. He later rejoined his company and regiment and participated in the Battle of Pound Gap, Kentucky on March 16, 1862. John also participated in the Cumberland Gap Campaign, under the command of Brigadier General George W. Morgan, and the Battle at Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi on December 27-28, 1862, where he was captured in the charge on December 29, 1862.
John was paroled on March 13, 1863 at New Orleans, Louisiana. He was treated for acute Rheumatism from April 12-17, 1863 and returned to duty. On April 19, 1863, John was sent to New York, where he arrived on May 11, 1863. From New York, he was sent to Camp Parole, Maryland and was reported there on May 16, 1863. On May 19, 1863, John was sent to Benton Barricks, Missiouri, where he arrived on May 23, 1863. From Benton Barricks, Missiouri, John was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio where he is reported on May 28, 1863. He is reported present there on June 13, 1863.
John returned to his company and regiment in November 1863. He was discharged on March 15, 1864 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and re-enlisted as a Veteran on March 16, 1864. Due to his re-enlistment, he left his company and regiment and returned home on a Veteran furlough on August 7, 1864 and returned on October 13, 1864.
In December 1864, the 22nd Kentucky Infantry was consolidated with the 7th & 19th Kentucky Infantries to form the 7th Kentucky Veteran Infantry. Due to the consolidation, John was transferred to Company C, 7th Kentucky Veteran Infantry on December 24, 1864 by Special Order No. 96 issued by Head Quarters Baton Rouge and Port Hudson. He remained with his company and regiment until the regiment was mustered-out on March 11, 1866 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
On March 15, 1887, John applied for a pension based on the disabilities he received during his service in the United States. His widow, Ellender B. ABRAMS, applied for a Widow's Pension on August 22, 1899.

- At the time of his enlistment, John ABRAMS resided in Russell, Greenup County, Kentucky. Since his discharge, on March 11, 1866, he resided in Greenup and Carter counties in Kentucky; Henry County, Indiana; and Lawrence County, Ohio. After his death, his widow, Ellender, resided in Greenup County, Kentucky where she died on November 4, 1916.
