The 22nd Kentucky Infantry was organized at Louisa, Ky., January 20, 1862 and mustered into federal
service at Camp Swaggert in Greenup County. Many of its troops were from Greenup county, although
some companies were recruited from Louisville and Franklin County. The regiment was commanded by
Colonel Daniel W. Lindsey who would later be promoted to command of the brigade in which the 22nd
fought throughout the War.
The 22nd fought under Colonel James Garfield in eastern Kentucky from December 1861 to March, 1862.
The regiment was then transferred to the Division of General George W. Morgan where it saw its first
significant action at Cumberland Gap. Morgan�s Division would then be attached to General William T.
Sherman�s Corps and move west to the Mississippi river .The 22nd would go on to particiapte in Grant�s
Vicksburg campaign and eventually be stationed in Lousisiana.

The 22nd was mustered out of federal service at Baton Rouge on January 20, 1865 as their three
year enlistment had expired.. Veterans and new recruits were transferred to the 7th Kentucky
Veteran Infantry. During their time as the 22nd Kentucky the regiment lost 3 Officers and 48
Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 145 Enlisted men by diseasefor a
total of 199, plus numerous troops captured. This site is in honor of the men of the 22nd
Kentucky Infantry who fought from western Virginia to Louisiana and points in between for almost
6 years in the Union Army.
