| Interpreting the Declaration of Independence |
| Project Profile: |
| In this project, students will read the Declaration of Independence, and after reading Thomas Jefferson's reasons for writing the Declaration as he did and after reading the British laws that prompted him to write the Declaration, students will rewrite the Declaration of Independence in modern language. |
| Student Objectives: |
| Students will be able to: * Find a picture of the original Declaration of Independence and try to read what was written. * Research the laws passed by the British Parliament which were the basis for the complaints Jefferson listed against the king. List these laws and correlate them with the complaints found in the Declaration. * Research the writings of the philosophers who influenced Jefferson and write a short essay explaining their views. * Research Jefferson's own words on why he wrote the Declaration as he did write a short essay comparing and contrasting his views and the philosophers' views. * Rewrite a modern Declaration of Independence, using these resources as the basis. |

| Government and the Citizen: Standard 1 (SS.C.1) The student understands the structure, functions, and purposes of government and who the principles and values of American democracy are reflected in American constitutional government. Benchmark (SS.C.1.3.1) knows the essential ideas of American constitutional government that are expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Fedealist Papers, and other writings. |
