Meet our Team: Mahesh Datla

From the time he was born, Mahesh has been described as a happy go lucky guy. Always involved in some sort of extracurricular activity, Mahesh tries to keep busy amongst leading a rather relaxing life. In the past, Mahesh has volunteered as an EMT at a Maryland fire department, worked at several nursing homes, and assisted the Red Cross at several hospitals. On his free time, Mahesh enjoys writing poetry, swimming and expanding his mind.
During his four years of college, Mahesh, on his own, has visited countries including Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland; in addition to traveling around India to such places as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Kashmir. Although these trips were not health care related, the trips provided Mahesh with the experience to meet people and understand the culture of countries other than the US.

In the middle of his college career, Mahesh had a revelation about life. He found that fruitful action isn�t concerned with doing actions solely for oneself, but rather gaining satisfaction in giving others satisfaction. This turning point in Mahesh�s life led him to join various clubs and volunteer organizations like volunteering at a South Richmond After-School program and S.A.V.E.S (Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Education).

Seeing that people in 3rd world countries are the most in need, Mahesh jumped at the chance to go to Kolkata to both help people and gain exposure to international medicine. Being of Indian origin and very passionate about India, Mahesh feels that the trip to Kolkata will provide him with a youthful exposure to a dedication in helping India. 

Mahesh is currently completing his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, and planning on attending medical school. Other than just taking classes, he is currently doing researching in the Tissue Engineering Laboratory at MCV and at the Massey Cancer Center.
