This Sahara was bought on the 16th of May 1995 by Dov Grodman. To be correct, he bought 2 Saharas which belonged to the Nathional Park Authority of Israel (K.K.L) in the 60s . One of the Saharas didnt have mechanical parts in it but had a well preserved body while the other one had all the parts.
It took more than 3 years of full restoration and numerous flights to Europe to import parts, in order to create one car from the 2 and to make the car a masterpiece of restoration (Paul Walton, CLASSIC CARS Magazine, April 2000).
Note that there are only 27 Citroen Saharas that exist in the world today. Citroen built only 694 Sahara units between the years 1958 and 1966.
Mechanical information:
The Sahara has 2 engines of 425cc with 13 breaking horse power . The rear of the car is a mirror image of its front. Citroen used the front axle, engine mountings and front suspension arms. The double clutches work by hydraulics, and not by a normal cable operation, so they can work together using just one pedal. The suspension is also beefed up to cope with the rough terrain by using independent oscillating arms based on the Citroen Ami.
On the dashboard you will find two ignitions and two starter buttons. Thats Because the engines are independent of each other, they need to be started separately, so it's the left key for the front and the right key for the rear. The car has also 2 fuel tanks. One for the rear engine and one for the front. They are located under the front seats and their filling neck can be seen on the front doors.
The gearstick is floor mounted (instead of standard's dash-mounted umbrella stick) with the gearbox tunnel running from back to front in the interior. To join the two gearboxes together, you push a small lever situated on the right hand side of the gearbox tunnel, and as it pushes out of neutral, the car suddenly becomes all-wheel drive.
The 2 CV 4x4 shows its superiority when used off road. All the four wheels being powered and equally loaded, one of them always finding grip and pushing forward. The vehicle moves safely even on snow and ice. It's speciality is sand and gravel - that's the real joy
Mechanical condition : The car is in excellent driving condition. Both engines & gears & 4 wheel drive unit were completely restored and run great. Some of the engine parts (oil filling neck, air filter cover) are chrome plated (see pictures). New electrical wiring system has been installed. Tires are in great shape. The car is TOTALLY RUST FREE.
Non authentic parts :The wheels are NOT the original ones. They have been taken from a regular 2CV (The original wheels are a bit bigger). Choke for the rear engine is missing.
