Jay�s smile and general face expression tells us the most about how he is feeling. And when he cares for someone, his eyes gleam and his face shines brighter than that of the Cheshire cat.
In series 4, Jay arrives as General of the Technos. In a position of power, he appears to have no time to have fun. Java, one of Ram�s wives makes it clear she is attracted to him, but his lack of interest is clearly shown, to her displeasure. But his arrival in the city changes that.
When he first meets Ebony, she is leading the group of mallrats who want to meet with the new invaders. She takes the high road with him, and he doesn�t like it very much. Jay likes to feel in control, which is why he�s very against Ved and rule breaking.
Later, Ebony slips up by getting herself caught on camera attempting to break into the Techno HQ. Jay pays her a bedside visit and threatens to have her deleted. Once again, Jay is in the drivers seat, the way he likes it. But it doesn�t last for long. Ebony won�t have him taking advantage of the situation like that, and springs the element of surprise on Jay, reversing roles and meeting him to discuss business. It is from then on that Jay and Ebony connect. He sees the powerful and inspiring side to Ebony that he would like to see in Ram but struggles to find.
Once Ram gets to know Ebony, Jay and the ex-loco are thrown together when the Technos move into her home. Displeased at first, Ebony sees the good side to it when Jay saves her life, and begins to open up to her, allowing himself to sometimes be off guard and relaxed around her. It is obvious he has an attraction to her, and what used to be a business relationship soon develops as the pair flirt with one another and form strong bonds.
When Jay is injured, he goes to Ebony, and it is the incident which brings the pair together. This also brings flashbacks about his past. From these we can learn about the real Jay. The one that is showing itself now he has found Ebony. Jay used to have a girlfriend, but she died. It angered him because she needed only one injection, but he couldn�t give it to her. In truth he blames himself. But now, he begins to see traits in Ebony, which he saw in his old girlfriend. We don�t know which ones, but we do know that Jay will only let his guard down for these specifics, and Ebony is one of them.
Things don�t run smoothly though. Ram proposes to Ebony and Jay ends things with her. He does it for her own good because he cares so much about her. But Ebony has been scorned in love too many times before, and what Jay says means nothing to her. At one stage she even asks Jay anything about it.
However, Ebony doesn�t want Ram, and once again the pair cannot fight their feelings and Jay tells Ebony he loves her and will support her against Ram. When am discovers their love, he uses technology to break them up putting Jay in a scene with Amber. From Ebony�s past experiences with Amber and Bray, she takes it too literally and leaves Jay without an explanation.
Devastated, Jay goes into a downward spiral. Ram doesn�t share his dreams. He has no one to love him, and the one person he trusts seems to have stabbed him in the back. So he leaves the Technos, but Ram wants him dead.
Meanwhile, Ebony discovers the DVD Ram showed her was a hoax. In her moment of truth, Ebony stops Jay from leaving the mall and she tells him she was wrong. For the first time in a long while, we see the happy, caring expression adorn Jay�s face again. Once he has seen the DVD the pair�s love grows stronger, and with Ram on their tails its time for them to run.
Although the pair meet a fair bit of danger their love supports each other. But one danger can be just too many. Especially when that danger is human and goes by the name of Amber.
Amber has always shared his dream ever since he knew her. Like Ebony she had fast replies to what he had to say to her, and she too wants a better future. The pair kiss. Jay pulls away and out of shock he leaves Amber.
Next day everything is back to normal, but when Amber announces that she is coming with Jay and Ebony, a spark in Ebony�s mind is lit- especially when the smile Jay saved for her is aimed in Amber�s direction. Towards the end of the series, Ebony�s jealousy factor kicks in again. She is nervy around Amber and very watchful over Jay. It takes a long talk with Siva to sort her problems. Even though her sister says it is obvious that Jay is besotted with Ebony, she needs guarantees.
That night, when Ebony dreams of Zoot, Jay comforts her. He holds her tightly to him and shares her pillow to give her the comfort she needs. We can see that he does this because he loves her, not because he feels he should.
Amber admits to caring for Jay, but tells Ebony she wants them to be happy. The only problem is, Jay wants to stay in the city and fight for the world he has dreamed of. He offers Ebony his love in the city, but we are yet to find out if he wants to share his life with her, or Amber. Although he shares his dreams with Amber, the spark which is made to last is alight between him and Ebony. He and Amber are so strongly minded that one day they may clash so strongly it ends them. Or, he and Ebony may drift apart. Whatever happens, Jay has 2 of the most promising relationships ever seen on the Tribe in his fingertips- he just needs to see which one he�d rather grasp.
