| A HOLE IN ONE Joyce Wethered was probably the greatest woman golfer of her day, but one ill-fated shot during the 1929 British Ladies Championship very nearly cost her the match. A powerful drive at the 17th sent her ball soaring high into the air, where a sudden gust of wind carried it so far off course that it landed straight in the trouser pocket of her husband, Ambrose, who was on the 12th green trying to mend a wheel on his wifes golf cart. Since the Championship rules book dictates that a ball must be played from where it lands, Ambrose was forced to lie face-down on the grass while his wife hacked away with a five-iron at the lump in his trousers. Joyce eventually dislodged the ball and finished the hole with a par-five, going on to win the title by four strokes. |
