| GAINSBOROUGHS BROTHER Unlike his brother Thomas who chose painting as a profession, Jack Gainsborough found the outlet for his creative expression as an inventor. Unrestricted by the traditional belief that an invention flourished. Over the years he was responsible for such innovations as the cuckoo that sang all year round and the walking haystack. An apple tree that stood in the Gainsborough family garden provided the inspiration for one of Jacks earliest and most remarkable achievements. One day, struck by an idea, he coated every fruit on the tree with dough and, with the aid of a portable chafing dish of red-hot coals and a saucepan of water, contrived to coddle each of the coated apples until it was cooked. Drawn by the smell of cooking, neighbors and passers-by were amazed to behold a tree whose branches were festooned with apple dumplings. |
