| ORANGES AND LEMONS The Oranges and Lemons service commemorating the restoration of the famous bells at St Clement Danes in the Strand, London, has been help annually since 1826. Every year, children from the nearby St Clement Danes School attend the service; after playing Oranges and Lemons Say the Bells of St Clements on handbells, each child is given an orange or lemon. This was originally a scheme introduced by Lord Goveny in an attempt to combat scurvy in infants. Over the years it has become a tradition to present the biggest fruits possible, and nowadays fruit-growers compete to provide giant specimens specially for the occasion. Since 1958, BBC gardening expert Fred Streeter a former pupil at the school has performed the Awarding of the Fruit ceremony. He took over this role from the Revd Anthony Baines, rector of St Clements since 1906, who died when he choked on a cotton reel. |
