| DENTAL INFERNO Alla Nazimova, a great beauty of the silent screen, had become increasingly self-conscious about her decaying and missing teeth. One day she persuaded a dentist to extract the remaining teeth and fit her with a false set. At that time cheaply produced teeth from celluloid were all the rage. They were highly inflammable. Nazimova was a renowned smoker and a week later, during a lively conversation at a cocktail party, the worst thing happened her teeth caught fire. Such was her surprise that she was unable to spit the flaming dentures out, and it was some moments before one of the other guest had the presence of mind to throw a fur stole over the poor womans head. Although tragedy had been averted, filming on Nazimovas latest motion picture had to be suspended until her eyebrows grew back. |
