| Reading:
Students will learn and use many reading skills in small, flexible
guided reading groups. They will use individual ability level books. Skills: phonics skills, comprehension, main idea, sequencing, character traits, summarization, imagery, making inferences, predicting outcomes, cause-and-effect, reading charts and graphs, genres, and listening to and responding to literature. |
Social
Studies: Students will study the lives of the pilgrims, ethnic
culture, communities, maps and globes. A Junior Achievement volunteer
will visit our classroom to share with us about economics |
Math:
Students will use models, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology to explore many math
concepts. Problem solving is also a big component of our math
curriculum. Skills: measurement, basic addition and subtraction, number patterns, fact families, time, calendars, graphs, symmetry, odd and even numbers, story problems, place value, money, greater than and less than, skip counting, balancing and weighing, capacity, two digit addition and subtraction, probability, arrays, fractions, and the exploration of basic multiplication and division. |
| Science:
The inquiry-based units include: butterflies, soil and worms, and
changes (solids, liquids,
gases). |
Health:
Students
will explore feelings, senses, appreciation of sight and hearing, the
parts
and function of the eye and the ear, and care of the eye and ear. |
Writing:
Students will use the writing process (prewrite, draft, edit, revise,
and publish) to create a variety of writing. They will employ basic
rules of grammar and
mechanics. |
| Handwriting:
Students will practice correct shape, size, and spacing of
letters in the Zaner-Bloser style of printing. |

Spelling: Students will have individual spelling lists based on district required spelling words and words taken from content study. |
