Darrug Lazarn
Darrug Lazarn, Bodyguard to the Stars

Darrug was... Well. Darrug was a playtest character, and over the course of the campaign, he demonstrated to the GM and game designer exactly How An Ogryn Could Become Overpowered. (It should be noted that I was, to an extent, trying to find holes in the system for just such a purpose. However, half of this was accidental.) These holes have since been plugged, and one or two of the lessons learned in plugging them have been useful in other places.

Darrug Lazarn was brother to Jinkar Lazarn, who worked at the time as a rating in the Imperial Navy, presumably on security detail. (Why the hell else hire someone whose entire race is big and dumb?) Darrug's occupation, by contrast, had up until the point of campaign beginning been a bodyguard; he'd ultimately killed his employer over a pay dispute, and the story opened with the brothers on a bus from the city Darrug worked in (which also boasted Logan's World's biggest spaceport) to visit their dear old ma.

Also on the bus were a Squat bandit, a cult muscleman, and a smooth-talking conman. During a shootout at the halfway mark diner, the five became friends, and managed to make it the rest of the way in a police wagon. On arrival, Darrug and Jinkar found that their mother was seriously ill, needing a kidney transplant, and the family kitty didn't have enough to cover it. Accordingly, they set out looking for profitable work. Darrug turned to assasination, doing only very mildly well at it.

And it turned out the conman was hiring, looking for muscle; looking for a retinue that'd be suitably imposing while he struck a deal he needed to strike. The four went along with him, Darrug doing the full 'professional bodyguard' bit. They negotiated, the conman got away with it, and the group came away with a contract; some vastly illegal drugs back to the capital. The Squat drove, Jinkar and Darrug provided the semblance of force with the cultist's firepower and Darrug's ripper gun to back it up, and they were ready to move out.

The conman smelled a rat in the capital, which is more than the rest of us did, and he vanished. The rest of us hired on briefly with the organisation we'd made a delivery to; security enforcers, under Darrug's direction.

They'd put the case to us that they were a splinter faction of the Imperial Cult with much more liberal leanings than was usual; the cultist, I think, was looking to turn one or two of the organisation's bigwigs and funnel the money to his own setup, but it didn't wash.  Other things happened.

We were to protect the life of some keynote preacher giving a speech in a couple of days time. And we worked for our money; a well-equipped Redemptionist hit squad broke in at night. Darrug and his friends woke up and fought them off.

And on the day of the speech...

The cultist was killed - telekinetically tossed over the edge of a tall building - by an inquisitor that the Squat, just about, managed to take down.

The crowd burst into an orgy of violence, which - combined with a spell and the drugs in the censers - summoned a number of Khornate daemons. If Darrug hadn't spotted that his employer was planning to start a rampage with explosive and taken action, he and Jinkar would have been overwhelmed. As it was, they managed to lock the compound down with the man they were protecting sealed in. Darrug had Jinkar watch him while he killed the owner in an underground temple to Slaanesh and then systematically hunted down every other living thing in the compound.

The Squat made his way back in to the compound via the sewers, and they regrouped, killing two of the daemons as they assaulted the house. With those already dead, that left four. And a huge mob.

Darrug prepared to sell his life dearly...

And then a Thunderhawk gunship swooped in from overhead. A second Inquisitor had come to investigate. Darrug and his companions attached themselves to the Inquisitorial group, and accompanied him down to the temple for protection. (The Squat, being slow, fell behind. Gradually his penchant for slaughter drew Khorne's attention and he was mutated into a massive killing monstrosity).

Darrug watched as the Inquisitor readied himself; his brief was to protect the Inquisitor as the man worked to end the peril.

And then he realised the Inquisitor planned to summon a daemon of his own - a Slaaneshi daemon  -to counter the forces of Khorne. (The motive, of course, he didn't know. He didn't know daemons picked sides.)

So he and his brother attacked the Inquisitor, wounding him and causing him to turn into a Keeper of Secrets - though, with the spell completed prematurely, not as strong a Keeper as he might have been.

The squat burst into the room. The three managed to kill the daemon.

There followed a long pause. Darrug arranged for the Squat to be stranded in the wilderness, reasoning this was the best he could do for his former friend. Jinkar went to the stars, eventually settling on Necromunda. And Darrug...

We don't know. We presume he went on to be a respected killer, and he had vague thoughts of working for an Inquisitorial coterie, which might or might not happen.

We do know that the Lazarn boys raised the money for their momma's kidney, and the operation was a success.
