The Boy Next Door
Do you remember
Several years ago
When we were young,
How we used to play together
Almost everyday...

It seems like yesterday
The childhood world
Of fairs, games and candy
And summer days
That never seemed to end
When we played ball and tag
From morning until night
Then played hide-n-seek in the dark
And caught lightning bugs
And talked about our dreams
And what we'd do when we grew up
Until our parents called us in

And do you remember
That one winter when it snowed
For days and days on end
And we built sledding trails
And raced down them
Or when we made a game
Of raking leaves
From all over the yard
Until we'd made several piles
And jumped in one
And the another
We went into the woods
When we weren't suppose to
And built tree houses and clubs
And swore to keep them secret
And that one day when
You got your go cart
And we were free
To explore the whole world
So long as we were careful and
Stayed in our yards and woods

But those days passed by fast
And we grew up, as children do
Until we reached a day when we
Assumed that we were too grown-up
To play amid the trees on summer nights...
And when I see you now
You've changed in ways I can't explain
But yet your still the same
You're like a tree that grew too fast

Because you still wear the baggy jeans
Symbolic of our youth
And you're still tall and skinny
You look well and happy
I see you working on your car
From the window in my room
It's so rare to see you anymore
And when I do it's not the same
We sit and talk about
The Bible and out jobs
Not cracking jokes
While playing games

I feel as if the boy next door is gone
Here is a new boy who only looks like the old
I like the new boy just as well
It's just not the same

And I long once more
For the summer days
When I stood on your porch
And rang the doorbell
And bade you come outside to greet
The afternoon's adventures...

Won't you come out and play, once more?
For we are still so young...
