Explorer '96 vs. Honda '03

What happened?

I was in the passenger seat of my friend's newly acquired Ford Explorer as we were driving up Central Park Ave. in Westchester. We were in the left lane, driving steadily on this main road, when we noticed too late that the car in front of us had come to a sudden standstill to make a left turn. We couldn't brake in time to stop, and couldn't switch lanes because of cars in the right lane. In a last attempt to avoid hitting the car, my friend swerved into oncoming traffic, with hopes of cutting across to the other side. We didn't make it, and got hit at the front/passenger side of the car.
