Sound Effects

By Mara

In 1999, I wrote a radio play based on Roald Dahl's short story "A Man from the South." Using the most wonderful program CoolEdit 2000, I was able to mix sound effect with the basic dialogue to produced a most professional-sounding product. I even had to chance to have it aired on the radio! But after the project was handed in and the mark received, I was still left with the many sound effects on my computer. I didn't want to just get rid of them, seeing as I had searched high and low on the internet for some of them, and others I had made all by myself. I figured that since I had such a hard time trying to get my hands on decent sound effects, the least I could do would be to share them with everybody else on the internet. Who knows, maybe you'll someday have to write a radio screenplay! If you have any sound effects you'd like to donate, I'm more than willing to accept them. Check out the ones I've gotten so far, and feel free to scam any or all of them. Please give credit where credit is due and just name your source (ie: me). Thanks and happy hunting!

Armswing.wav: Not really an armswing, but the sound of a punch connecting with something relatively fleshy.
Beach.au: I'll be honest with you. It sounds only moderately beach-y, more like a plane taking off than anything else. I suppose that it could be edited though.
Beer.au: A beer being opened and poured.
Beerpour.au: Another beer being poured and opened, but this one is a little shorter and more beer-like.
Bird1-1.wav: Sound of a bird tweeting, but kind of sounds like a "twittle" noise.
Bird1-2.wav: Very realistic sound of a bird.
Birdambience1.wav: Sound of a tropical bird in a forest.
Birdwhs.wav: Sounds very much like a bird whistle that you'd get in a Xmas cracker, but it's realiztic enough.
Blade.wav: "Sssshing!" The noise that a blade might make when pulled from a scabbard.
Children.wav: Children laughing and playing. Useful for crowd scenes if mixed with other people noises.
Chirps.mp3: Two different real bird sounds.
Crack.wav: The sound a whip might make when hitting a wooden/metal target.
Creak.wav: Not very realistic, but can be easily disguised as a creaking wooden floor when superimposed over footsteps.
Door-2.au: Real door opening.
Doornoises.wav: Three different door selections from a sound effects CD. Includes door slam, door open and slam, and door creaking.
Dooropen.wav: The sound of a door opening. Contained in doornoises.wav as well.
E_laugh.wav: An evil laugh, taken from what seems to be a Looney Tunes episode (sounds like Bugs Bunny).
Footstep.wav: Be forwarned -- this is not a clip of someone walking. It's an excerpt from some unknown country tune which can be looped and mixed as a background noise for a bar scene or something.
Footsteps.wav: Quick-paced footsteps of someone approaching wearing hard-soled shoes on concrete.
Glasses Being Put Away.au: Realistic sound of someone taking several glasses from a hard counter and putting them away.
Group1.wav: A short clip of a group of adults at a party laughing and conversing.
Grpsplsh.au: Several items being thrown into water, making big consecutive splashing noises. Can be separated into individual splashes.
Iceinglass.au: Realistic sound of three ice cubes being dropped into a glass.
Impact.wav: Sound of a hit being delivered to a fleshy target. Great when used in succession with armswing.wav in a beating scene.
Keys.wav: Keys being jingled.
Keyspickup.wav: Keys being picked up off a wooden table.
Knock.au: Someone knocking heavily on a rather cumbersome wooden door.
Knock.wav: Not the same as knock.au. A more timid knock on a lighter wooden door.
Ladyscrm.wav: A horrified (and very loud) woman's scream.
Laugh.wav: Yoda's laugh, I think. Or Grover's.
Laugh2.wav: Ace Ventura's mocking laugh.
Laugh4.wav: Not actually a laugh, but a clip from the X-men crossover episode of Spiderman. It's just called laugh because Spiderman says, "Whatever you do, just don't make me laugh."
Laugh5.wav: A gleeful laugh, unfortunately accompanied by background noise.
Laugh6.wav: A crowd laughing in unison, "Ho ho ho, hee hee hee, ha ha ha." Very strange indeed.
Laugh7.wav: Three Homer laughs.
Laugh8.wav: A chipmunk laugh.
Lrgebrp.wav: As you've mostly figured out, it's a large burp. Enjoy.
Lighterflick.wav: Coincidentally enough, a lighter being flicked.
Neckcrak.wav: The short sound of someone cracking a joint (I'm assuming the neck.)
Ohno.wav: The sound of Burt Raccoon (for those of you who remember The Raccoons) expressing his dismay in usual form.
Ow.wav: The sound of a rather high-piched man saying, "Ow!"
Parrot.wav: A parrot saying hello.
Puncface.wav: The sound of someone being punched in the face. Best used in conjunction with armswing.wav and impact.wav.
Ripples.wav: The sound of rippling water. Very loud and not very realistic.
Rustle.wav: Supposedly the sound of leaves rustling, but it sounds to me like a stagecoach or a horse-drawn buggy of some sort.
Shutdoor.wav: The sound of a rather flimsy door shutting.
Singing.wav: A real bird singing. It sounds like a red-winged blackbird or something like that.
Slapface.wav: Someone getting their face slapped by a hand. May be used with other sounds such as puncface.wav in a beating mix.
Splash.wav: A different type of splash noise, more like a big stone being dropped into stagnant pond water.
Stream.wav: Much more water-like sound of a noisy stream or a babbling brook. Whichever you prefer.
Summerb.wav: The best bird sounds that I have. There is some white noise in the background, which unfortunately can't be edited out, but on the whole, it's a great sound.
Surprise.au: A crowd expressed surprise in unison, "Ahh! Ooo! Oh! Wow! Gee!" Again, very strange.
Transform.wav: A great sound for sci-fi radio plays. I personally thought that it was going to be the Tranformers sound, but it's more of a Dr. Who-like sound.
Ugh.wav: A woman expressing her disgust.
What.wav: A growly man angrily exclaiming, "What?"
Whip.wav: A whip coming into contact with air.
Whip2.wav: An old-fashioned western kind of whip sound, like one you'd hear after a cowpoke would yell, "RAWHIDE!"
Who.wav: For those of you who watch Duckman, you may recognize this flatulence as belonging to Grandma-ma.
Who_else.wav: A high-pitched bit of flatulence.
