THE SECRET OF NIMH
GATEWAY TO NIMH
2001
Acrylics & colored pencil
18"x24"

With this piece, I wanted to convey something akin to the adult marketing campaigns that artist John Alvin did for many of Disney's features -- particularly BEAUTY & THE BEAST.  After United Artists merged with MGM in the early 1980's, Don Bluth's acclaimed but underappreciated THE SECRET OF NIMH suffered a poor marketing campaign, so I thought it'd be fun to do a simple, yet dramatic image from within the film...  In spite of today's computer-enhanced animation techniques, NIMH still holds up magnificently, with a highly-detailed, old style animation on par with FANTASIA.  If you haven't seen it yet, it really is worth a look.

BEFORE AND AFTER

I recently repainted some of the details on this work, "adjusting" the light and color for a more dramatic effect.  You can see the "before" and "after" details of the character at left and right, respectively....
