Kubrick's
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY had a profound influence on me, and this new work was my way of celebrating the film (I think it's way cooler than the year we're currently living in).

This year's release of
A.I.: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE marked one of Stanley Kubrick's great unmade dreams (next to NAPOLEON and WARTIME LIES/ARYAN PAPERS), as realized by Steven Spielberg.  The question will always remain just HOW the film may have turned out had Kubrick lived  -- one could presume it would be substantially darker -- but certainly the project that resulted is captivating in its own right, filled with some deeply moving scenes and crafted with much intelligence.  Perhaps its sophistication and tone do not appeal as much as the lighthearted entertainment mass audiences look for (I suggest those persons go see TOMB RAIDER), but -- not unlike Kubrick's work -- A.I. will find its audience in time.  Spielberg and Kubrick may have had different work habits, as well as  radically different creative sensibilities and views, but thematically there is indeed a brotherhood, and they certainly admired each other a great deal.  This artwork intended to celebrate the creative "fusion" of these two filmmakers, with A.I.'s robot boy, David, meeting his cinematic ancestor, HAL 9000.
