Our Cinema Club is an initiative of the Cultural Section which belongs to the Trade Union Center of Thessaloniki (T.U.C.T.). This Year, 1999, it completed five years from its departure. The Cinema Club is an attempt Which started as an experiment and  challenge, from the former administration of .the T.U.C.T , in May 1994. Since then it has developed into a serious medium for cultural  intervention to the working people, but also to the city of Thessaloniki.
The famous director Theodoros Aggelopoulos has been awarded from the president of T.U.C. Panagiotis Avramopoulos...
The first screenings, arranged by the Club, that took place every        Thursday -under bad conditions, like an elementarious infrastructure and        rented equipment, with many shortages, but also with a lot of good taste        and appetite for work, gave way to the second running period, which        started in autumn 1995. In that new period the equipment was the club's        property, the conditions were much better and the Club known by almost        anybody in town.
In that 2nd period the Club introduced tributes devoted to several        topics, anniversaries, facts. The period ended in Summer 1996. In the next        running period of the Club much had changed. After six months of        reparations that had taken place in the big show room of the T.U.C.T. and        with the support of the Organization for the Cultural Capital, the Cinema        Club continued its screenings in the renewed hall.

"The best drug... the love for the life"...
In this 3rd period there were high- technical specifications in sound and picture. This fact gave the Cultural Section of the T.U.C.T the opportunity to negotiate for new agreements with new groups wanting to  collaborate with the Club. The groups that collaborated with the Club in  the last five years were many. Some of them were The Ministries of  Defense, Labor, Culture and Macedonian -Thrace, the General Office of the New Generation, the Prefectural Authority of Thessaloniki, the radio station of HRT3 102FM , The International Trade Center of Thessaloniki (I.T.T.)*.

The Club's cooperations included also groups directly connected to  cinema, like the Greek Cinema Center, the Film Library of Greece and the        Short Film Festival in Drama. Since its beginning the Club showed over 570        movies, many of which were prefaced by specialists like directors, actors        cinema people, but also historians, journalists and syndicalists. All of        them had either to suggest, to present or to remember something related to        the movie to be shown or the running tribute. There were scheduled        10-minute prologues which often endured an hour without to bore or create        resentment among the visitors and without forcing people to go. This        interest and cooperation by the visitors-viewers for the issues brought up        by the Cinema Club gave way to the need for a more analytical chat about        the cinema. HRT3 accepted the Club's proposal to organize a 30-days        seminar. In this seminar, which was attended by one thousand of friends of        the Cinema Club, famous cinema people presented the history, present and        future of the cinema from the time of the heroic pioneers to the industry        of cinema, the style, the schools and the introduction of the new        technology in Greek Cinema production.

From its beginning the Club gave special attention to the Greek cinema.        As we are living in a period dominated by the American cinema and with        little European feedback, we wanted to support our people, because we        believe that they manage to convert the special characteristics of our        country, even under difficult conditions. Every September there is a        10-day tribute dedicated to the Greek cinema with which the Club starts        its new season. This tribute consists of Greek movies produced by the        Greek Cinema Center as well as independent productions and special moments        of the old Greek cinema. A special should be also made to the filmmaker  of Thessaloniki.
Special tributes of the Club were dedicated to Thessaloniki and to creators of this town. It should be mentioned at this point that from its        first running period the Club had been asked by the town's producers to        give place and time to them through the programs being announced. It is        also worth mentioning that many of the movies of this town's producers,        shown by the Club, were first screenings, as those people were not able to        present their works, because of the special conditions of the cinema        networks.

Presenting also a range of amateurish and experimental films helped new  creators to show off their work and making the first steps in their  carriers. That gave the opportunity to start a good collaboration with the   International Short Film Festival in Drama.
Our club made a huge range of tributes with movies related to several        topics like cinema history, Balkan, European and International cinema,        women, media, music, but also the Labour-Day, the labour movement and the        syndicalism, and a special tribute to the Greek and Turkish cinema.
Before ending the tribute section we should notice that the Club  devoted tributes to social problems, disability, sense and sensibility and  established the Anti-racism week of cinema.

The media and the local and national authorities reacted positively to        the Club from the first moment. Especially the media met with satisfaction        the foundation of a cinema club by a social factor with the prestige and        the history the T.U.C.T. This resulted in many municipalities and other        groups, that wanted to go in for cinema matters, asking the Cinema Club        for advice.
Finally, we can say that our club is the first and only cinema club  created by a trade union center in the world.
