Camp 8th La Inft, Reg of A. D., May 28th, 1863

Brother James,
I saw one of the 11th Ill boys today, and he had been in all the fights up to yesterday. He said he was confident that John and Silas was still safe, but was sure they was still alive, for there had only one man in our Co. been killed, and that was Charles Snider, one of the old Co. F. boys. He had his head shot off by a cannon ball. So, up to yesterday, John and Silas was all right or perhaps slightly wounded. McKee had received a very slight wound in the forehead, but able for service. It was very slight. You may know more about them than I do. Of course you know Col Nevius was killed. Oh but I wish that battle was over, and our brothers, John and Silas, was safe. Last night our pickets was attacked (one of our Cos go on each morning) about 11 o'clock at night and Captain badly wounded in each leg. The Rebels came around them in the rear, that is between our camp and the picket post and fired a volley into them before the guards knew they was there or near there.

Enlistment details:
Snider, Charles
