I have not seen him for a week. I do not think there [will] be a fight here soon. Soldiers are dying with small pox and fever like rotten sheep. Our cook (Louis) is sick. Guess he will die. I have not been down to see Vicksburg yet. Several of our Co. have been. We get no news here of any kind. I think Jehue will resign in a month or two. Did my Zetty get my letter from Memphis? Do not call our boy Oscar. The meanest man in our Reg is called that and two negroes. Call him that other name. I will write every day after this to some of you. We had a hard time of it on the boat. Helena, Ark. is a small dirty place, and [undecipherable] is still worse. The plantations on the rivers look like towns. Houses all painted white and good size and from twenty to fifty on each farm. Sile B. has just come and says this is Sunday. You may not believe it, but we never have the least idea what day it is. You know I said when I left home I would be gone eighteen months. It is nearly up, and this looks more like a war now than it did then. I am ready and willing to quit and go home. It's really awful to see the new graves here and our soldiers are deserting fast. Kiss Zetty and Vernon for me. Remember WilliamEnlistment details:
