Sarah,
I have received several letters from you lately. The first mail through brought me several letters from you, James, Leander, and really it was a pleasure to hear from home. Last night I read one from you, and I was really surprised to read it. I had no idea you was treated like an outsider by all or think you are. I think Leander and Father are exceptions, but nothing surprised me so much as what Sarah and Rebecca said and done to you about the ironing. Has my sister forgot what I have done for her. Long time ago I stood by her when other brothers did not. I have always treated her as a sister in every respect. I loved her as a brother should love a sister, and this is the treatment I get in return. God knows I did not expect it, anyhow, from Rebecca. I do not care so much for what Sarah says or does. But has she forgot she washed at our house week after week, and Miss Combs washed for her at our house month after month? Was she ever treated so? No Never. Has she forgot she has a good husband in the army and it may be his lot to fall. Does she know I always carry one of his blankets and overcoat and often both of his blankets, and I take them and put them in the wagon with mine? How he would get along if he had to carry them is more then I know. Perhaps she does. I did all in my power to get him a discharge, and so did McKee, and this is the pay I get from her, for as they treat you, so they treat me. I acknowledge I do not understand it. James said in a letter to Silas, "William is the worst homesick man in your company." It may be so, but if he was here, he might think different. I want home. I am tired of soldiering, and I have good reasons for wanting home. Leander is the only one that asks if we need money or anything else he could send us, and sends me stamps and envelopes, and he writes to me like a good and kind brother, and if I have ever hurt his feelings in anything I have done, I am sorry of it, for truly I never intended it.
