disappointed. I would a liked very well to a seen some of my folks before we went to Corinth. I
have come through two or three very severe and hard fought battles, and a good
prospect of getting into another in a few days. It is hardly possible I will
escape again. I hope I will, but it hardly seems possible for me to come through
again. If I did not think our Reg had to fight again at Corinth or wherever
they make a stand, I would a been sorry to a seen any of you. But everything goes
to show that we have to try it again, and I would like to assure some of my dear
folks and talked to them and listened to them tell everything before we left here.
But it is too late now, and I suppose it is best that none of you come. I know
it was hard on J.B. Cunningham's family. It was a dear visit to them. It would a
been far better if he had stayed at home. You know, I did give this subject a
final farewell, and I am sorry to name it again, but I cannot help it, forgive me.
Hugh sent in his resignation yesterday and it was approved by Col Ransom
and sent to Gen Halleck's headquarters. He will likely accept it, but he may not.
If he does, you may look for Hugh home in two or three weeks. But as it is
uncertain about his resignation being accepted, you need not look for him or say
anything about it. I will be sorry to see Hugh leave, he has been as good as a
brother to me, and I and Silas will miss him for a few days, but we can stand that
and anything else they may see fit to put on us. There has been a lack of
consolidating our Reg with some other small Reg. I do not think they can do it,
and our officers are very much opposed to it. We was sworn to serve in the 11th Reg
Ill for three years unless sooner dischared. But they might put another Reg in ours
and still call it the 11th.
