dollars for one. I could not get any. I came ashore, saw two good blankets drying outside of a tent.
I just went up to them like they belonged to me, took them down, carried them aboard,
and put them on Andrews. He said they felt so good and comfortable. I was so glad I
stole them and he was so glad to get them. He gave me his hand and said, "You are so
good to me." We both cried. And oh how I did hate to leave him. I bade him goodby and
said I hoped to see him when I went home. He said, "Yes, William, I will see you again."
But I did not think then he would be alive next morning. That was about 8 at night. I
think he thought it very doubtful. But enough of that. I have wrote so much about
that fight, that I think you are more than satisfied. Still I could write things that
I know and things I like to talk about. But I guess John can tell you all that has
not been written. I would like to see you all or one of you or two of you. I can't
help but look for some of you, and yet I do not expect to see you. Sometimes I think
May might come up. But it is so uncertain where we will be that you could hardly
find us, even if you was down at the landing. I have no idea you could hear of us,
unless you come across one of our Reg. I have just been out talking to a native of
Northern Alabama. He says two thirds of the citizens of Northern Alabama and
Mississippi are strong Union, and I believe it is so. In this county (Hardin) they
had an election for sheriff just a day or two before we got to Savannah, and the
Union candidate was elected over the Secesh by a long majority. I
know this is true. The citizens say Wayne Co., Tenn is stronger Union than this.
Also Giles Co. I wonder what Gen. McClellan is doing and Banks and Wool. Will Gen.
McClellen have a grade review at Manassas or is he moving? I wonder if any force is
marching towards Memphis, or do we have them all to fight? Has Mrs. Lincoln had
any more receptions and balls since her sons died? Are you elected City Clerk?
How did Kell take his defeat? Tell old Jim I never will write to him again. I
wrote to him and he never answered.
