Milliken's Bend, La, June 20th, 1863Sarah,
It has been an age since I wrote a letter and a long time since I received any till this morning. I received two from you, one from my kind sweet Zetty, and one from James, also papers from Lee. Tell him thanks. Since writing from Providence, we have been kept a little busy. Some time ago there was a fight here, and at the same time it was expected they (Rebs) would attack Goodrich's Landing fifteen or twenty miles below Providence, and about the same distance above here, and my Co. with 3 others of the Reg was sent down there to help them. We stayed there four days, without tents and it raining nearly all the time, and an alarm about every hour. While we was there, the Rebs instead of attacking us, went to Providence and gave them a small round, but was drawn off by our Reg alone without any damage to us. I think there is no doubt but what the Negroes will fight. I know while at Goodrich's Landing, we had big alarms day and night, and they stood without any apparent fear. Before we left Goodrich's Landing, the Reg was ordered here so they stopped at the Landing for us, and we came down here.![]()
