Boston Brown Bread

Grandma Krueger's recipe via Beth -- Here's the recipe for Boston Brown Bread. It's the recipe that Dad sent me, but I've added ALL of the ingredients. ;-)

Open two large cans of pumpkin and make into pies. (need cans later)

2 cups hot water
1 cup raisins (pour water over raisins, let stand overnight)
1 cup sugar
1 well beaten egg
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tsp soda
1 cup nuts (more if you are making for me)
1 Tbsp shortening
1 Tbsp molasses
2 3/4 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla

Beat sugar, shortening, egg and molasses. Add to cooled raisins. Combine remaining ingredients. Mix wet and dry ingredients well. Pour into the 2 large pumpkin cans. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

(I don't use the pumpkin cans, I bake in two loaf pans.)
