At first he is mean and seems uncaring. He is vain and has never really known true love. As he spends time with Miaka, he falls in love and learns compassion. He is jealous of Tamahome and challanges him for Miaka's love. But, realizes Miaka can't love him like she does Tamahome. He steps aside for her sake and marries another. But, even so, he never really gets over her.
