Summer of 2004 Adventures
My summer adventures this year began with a three night four day trip to San Francisco. I enjoyed hiking in the Marin Headlands where this picture was taken. I also explored Coit Tower, Lombard Street, the Legion of Honor, Berkeley, and the Muir Woods. It was a wonderful trip and great way to start the summer.
My second big adventure started on the island of Hawaii also known as "the Big Island". This island is one of the youngest (only a million years old compared to Kaua'i at five million years old), and it is made up of a great deal of new volcanic rock. This picture is from a hike I took over one of the lava flows. Ancient Hawaians pecked petroglyphs into the rocks. There were over a thousand examples of rock art on this one trail.
While in Hawaii I visited Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This picture is taken from a helicopter ride I took over the park in the morning. This is the site where lava from the Kilauea Caldera is entering into the ocean. Later that night, I hiked over the top of the lava rock to watch the glowing lava enter the water. If you look closely in this picture, you can see the white trail markers showing where I hiked. They are right above the ledge you can see. The hike was dark and done by flashlight but watching the lava enter the water at night was a sight I will never forget.
When I wasn't hiking, kayaking, or snokeling, I was in the ocean enjoying the water. Here I have a big smile on my face because I have just gotten a really good boogie board ride on the waves. Little do I know that I am also covered in sand, but I guess that happens if you like to boogie board. The water was warm and fun. I really enjoyed all of my time on the island.

I ended my summer with time in both Prescott (for Choir Camp) and Sedona (for relaxing and reading time). Here I am enjoying the beautiful West Fork trail with my two shelties Carma (left) and Cinder (right). These relaxing weeks were just what I needed to prepare myself for the upcoming school year.
