Summer of 2003
Over the past year and a half, I have been attending classes to earn my Masters in Education. On August 8, I graduated from Arizona State University. I earned a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Professional Studies) with an emphasis in teaching the gifted. I am wearing the light blue education hood around my neck and if you look carefully you can see my tassle is light blue too. By earning my Masters I have completed a life long goal!
Luckily, I didn't have to spend the whole summer working. I went to Kaua'i, Hawaii for the first time. As you can see, I also went surfing. I had never surfed before and after a surf lesson and some help from my instructor, I was able to ride this wave all the way into shore. I have to say that I was hooked!
Kaua'i, also known as the garden isle, has lots to do. I surfed, hiked, snorkeled, kayaked, shopped, swam, and yes, went horseback riding. This is my horse Rusty. He was well named because he was covered with little brownish spots. I took a three hour riding tour of the countryside, which ended with a waterfall swim. Rusty was a great ride and the day was amazing!
This amazing shot is taken from a ridge along the NaPali Coast trail. This trail is located on the North shore of the island and stretches for 11 miles. The land is so rugged that there are no roads along it and the only way back to the beaches is by hiking. I hiked back two miles to a hidden white sand beach. The views were incredible and the water was stunning!
My absolute favorite part of the trip was snorkeling. I snorkeled at seven different beaches.  Kaua'i is a haven for green sea turtles, known as honu in Hawaiian. This baby was floating right on the surface getting a breath when I snapped this picture. At one point I was snorkeling with five sea turtles. They are amazingly peaceful animals and did not seem bothered by my presence at all. Swimming with the sea turtles really was the highlight of this great trip!
