Omaha Beach
After the visit to the cemetery, I headed down the cliffs to Omaha Beach. On the morning of June 6, 1944, 50,000 U.S. soldiers attacked the beach, which was lined with obstacles and mines. The cliffs above were filled with German bunkers firing right down on the troops. Many soldiers never even made it to the shore. Those that did had to make it up the seawall and surrounding cliffs. On the actual day, this beach was filled with chaos.
Today, there is a memorial on the beach remembering all of the men and the countries involved in the attack. The cliffs in the backgound were once filled with German bunkers and every inch of the beach was  presighted for an enemy attack. Today, people picnic on the beach and enjoy the weather and water. I walked along the beach and picked up rocks. The water was warm, and it was hard to imagine that such an incredible battle was fought here.
The monument is in the shape of one of the surrounding cliffs. It is made out of the rock from the beach. Those who fought in this battle had to overcome tremendous odds to get to the top of the cliff. They did not give up even though it would have been easy to do so. We owe them a great deal for their sacrifices.
